Introduction

The curriculum is taught in blocks centered on body systems with horizontal integration of basic medical sciences, and elements of vertical integration of clinical application and clinically related cases. This makes it easier for the student to understand the strong relationship between basic sciences and the applied clinical sciences.

Curriculum Phases

The total program is divided into four phases as follows:

Phase I (Premedical): One year (two semesters – 35 credit hours):

Students in the first year study preparatory courses that enhance their skills through intense English courses and courses in major scientific disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), in addition to general courses (communication, computer skills, Islamic and Arabic language courses).

A GPA of 2.5 out of 4 and successful completion of courses in English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are pre-requisites for registration of the next Phase (level three, which is the first semester of year II).

Phase II (Basic Medical Sciences): Years 2,3, and 4 (five semesters – 93 credit hours):

This phase covers all body systems in health and disease. It begins with the Foundation Courses (ANAT214, PHSL215, and PATH216) in level (semester) 3, which cover general principles of all basic sciences in Medicine. Passing all three courses is a pre-requisite to continue studying body system blocks in the levels to follow.

In the following semesters (levels 4-7), all body systems are covered integrating basic medical sciences (horizontal integration) and some clinical applications and cases (vertical integration). Each body system block integrates related basic sciences (anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology), in addition to radiological anatomy, and clinically relevant information.

Completion of this phase is a prerequisite for the transition to phase III.

Phase III (Clerkship Clinical Rotations): Years 4,5,and 6 (five semesters – 92 credit hours)

Patients' encounter starts in level 8, which includes therapeutics and introduction to clinical medicine,

which are pre-requisite to continue further clinical medical sciences and clinical rotations in medical and surgical specialties (levels 9-12).

Completion of all courses in this phase is a prerequisite for transition to phase IV.

Phase IV (Clinical Internship): One year (12 months – 2 credit hours)

After successful completion of all previous courses (220 credit hours), students must successfully complete one year (12 months) of internship rotations to complete the graduation requirements for MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery).

Rotations are performed in major disciplines of Medicine and Surgery with a choice of elective disciplines at accredited training institutes.
